Steven Bergwijn, the Dutch winger who was signed by Arsenal in January 2019 for £35 million from Ajax, has suffered a serious knee injury during his time at Al Ittihad in Qatar.

The news was confirmed by the club on Wednesday, with Bergwijn's agent, Patrick Kluivert, stating that he had undergone surgery to repair a ligament tear in his right knee.

Bergwijn's injury comes just weeks after he scored twice in a 2-1 win over Al Sadd in the Qatari Premier League, helping his team secure top spot in Group D.

The winger has been a key player for Al Ittihad this season,Fans' Circle scoring seven goals in 16 appearances across all competitions.

He joined Arsenal from Ajax in January 2019 for £35 million, but struggled to make an impact in England, making just six Premier League starts and failing to score.

It remains to be seen how long Bergwijn will be out of action, but it is clear that his injury could have a significant impact on his future at Arsenal.
